You could not have asked for a better setting for the first conference double header of the season against Clinton Prairie, a packed crowd, 65 degrees at start time, and an opportunity to make a difference in a life. You see, the Frontier Falcon Baseball team was playing for a much bigger cause that 2 conference wins, they were playing for all those lives that have been affected by a disease we know as cancer. The team sold shirts all week to show that we are in an effort to K Cancer. It was amazing to see the support of the students and staff on Friday when the halls were filled with red K Cancer shirts.
When the game took off it showed to be a pitchers dual between 2 pitchers that wouldn’t not give in on the strike zone. Cole Fesler for the Falcons and Jared Stillwell battled it out on the hill until the Gophers scored first in the top of the 5th by plating 1 run. That didn’t stop Frontier. In the bottom of the sixth, Zeb Davis led the drive to get the Falcons moving in the right direction when he singled to center and stole second base to move himself into scoring position for Jarret Burroughs. Burroughs walked giving Frontier the go ahead run on 1st base. Fesler’s single in the 6th scored Davis and tied up the score at one a piece. Winter Burghardt would come in to Courtesy Run for Fesler and would eventually come around to cross the plate making the score 3-1 on a Zach Loy infield single. A 1-2-3 inning for the Falcons sealed the deal for game 1 and gave Cole Fesler his first victory of the year on the mound.
Fesler was hot at the plate going 2-3 and driving in one run. He singled in the fourth and sixth innings. Fesler allowed one earned run, four hits and two walks while striking out one over seven innings of work.
Clinton Prairie scored its only run of the game on an RBI single by Stillwell in the fifth inning.
Game 1 put Frontier at 3-1 on the season and 1-0 in conference.
In game 2 the Falcons starting putting some runs on the board. It was a game of an extreme high and extreme lows. With a lead of 9-0 going into the top of the 5th, Frontier managed to give up a lead in one inning by allowing 10 runs to cross the plate. That’s not the end of the story. Frontier tied it back at 10 in the bottom of the 5th and scored 2 go ahead runs in the bottom of the 6th to secure game 2.
AJ Hall got the start in game 2 going 4 innings allowing 3 earned runs on 2 walks with 5 strikeouts. Tyler Prior eventually came in and acquired the win throwing 3 innings with 1 earned run, 2 walks and 2 strike outs.
The offense was led by Freshman Tanner Dold who went 2-3 and 3 RBI’s. Cole Fesler would continue his hitting ways in the back half of the double header going 2-2 with 2 RBI’s and 4 stolen bases. Senior Sam Kriebel busted out with a bases loaded/bases clearing double down the left field line 1-3 with 3 RBI’s and 2 stolen bases.
The Falcons ended the day stealing 11 bases. Nine of those stolen bases came in the second game of the double header.
Frontier moved to 4-1 on the season and 2-0 in conference play. The Falcons will continue play on Monday as the host Faith Christian for a 5pm game.
